Arlo

Good Luck Arlo!!!

Arlo leaves for Advanced training on May 24, 2008.  He will spend 6 months learning advanced skills such as opening doors, operating light switches and pulling wheel chairs.  We wish him the best for the future.

Arlo is the 7th puppy we have trained.  He was born 12/16/06 and is a Labrador/Golden Retriever cross.

Thank you for your continued support in my fundraising effort.

Tolan II

Introducing Tolan II.

Tolan arrived in January 2008  and is our 8th puppy to raise.  He was born November 15, 2007 and is a Labrador/Golden Retriever cross.  He misses his best friend Arlo but is learning to play with the 'old dogs', Summer and Arri.

Canine Companions for Independence

Why is this organization important to Dee's Specialty Cakes?

Dee became a Puppy Raiser for Canine Companions for Independence the same year she opened her business, 1999.  Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) provides highly training assistance dogs to people with disabilities. The dogs are companions and helpers. They provide independence and confidence. It is amazing what the dogs can do, even if it is just to put their head in a lap.

As a puppy raiser, the dog is with Dee for 12 to 16 months. She is responsible for basic obedience and socialization as well as health care, nutrition and grooming. This is a voluntary position and not reimbursed for expenses. CCI is funded by donations and fund raising. The dogs can not be purchased or earned.

The recipients of these dogs, also known as"graduates" receive the dogs completely free.  The graduate receives a 40 lb. bag of dog food, leash, harnesses, collar, grooming tools, heartworm medication and flea preventative and the all important toys.  It is because of fund raising and contributions that CCI is able to provide these dogs at no cost to the recipients. Your help would be appreciated from the tip of their tales to the end of their nose.

If your business, organization, class or club would like a presentation about CCI and puppy raising, please contact Canine Companions for Independence at

1-800-572-BARK or visit their website www.cci.org
