As a puppy raiser, the dog is with Dee for 12 to 16 months. She is responsible for basic obedience and socialization as well as health care, nutrition and grooming. This is a voluntary position and not reimbursed for expenses. CCI is funded by donations and fund raising. The dogs can not be purchased or earned.

The recipients of these dogs, also known as"graduates" receive the dogs completely free.  The graduate receives a 40 lb. bag of dog food, leash, harnesses, collar, grooming tools, heartworm medication and flea preventative and the all important toys.  It is because of fund raising and contributions that CCI is able to provide these dogs at no cost to the recipients. Your help would be appreciated from the tip of their tales to the end of their nose.

If your business, organization, class or club would like a presentation about CCI and puppy raising, please contact Canine Companions for Independence at

Teva II

Teva  is our 11th pup to raise.  He arrived in Michigan  on December 20, 2010.  After 3 yellow dogs in a row, it was time for another black dog.  Teva is a very confident lab/golden cross.  He will be supervising the bakery until May 2012.
Why is this organization important to Dee's Specialty Cakes?

Dee became a Puppy Raiser for Canine Companions for Independence the same year she opened her business, 1999.  Canine Companions for Independence (CCI) provides highly training assistance dogs to people with disabilities. The dogs are companions and helpers. They provide independence and confidence. It is amazing what the dogs can do, even if it is just to put their head in a lap.
Summer
Summer is a full Golden Retriever. She was our fifth dog to raise.  Summer was released from the program for thunderstorm fears.  She is now the official doorbell at our house.

Summer and Maleah are 1/2 sisters, they share the same father.
Maleah
AKA Mel.  Maleah is a lab/golden cross with lots of Golden qualities.  She was our 3rd dog to raise and was released from the training program.  Mel now lives with my brother.
